Create The Thing You Want to See
Make it happen little by little…
It’s so easy to be discouraged when you haven’t landed that dream project or that dream job.
Like whenever I think about former classmates of mine who are working at publications they admire or traveling and reporting, which is something I’d love to do.
Whenever I feel down about opportunities I may not have snagged, I write a post on Medium. Or I send out a pitch. Or I go to an event that may lead to some inspiration for me. But whatever I do, I don’t stop creating.
I remember reading this quote from Toni Morrison:
“If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”
I figured that train of thought was what made Morrison the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. And though I don’t think I can ever get to a fourth of what she’s accomplished with her career… I can take her advice and create.
If you’re passed over for a job, create a project to keep your skills up. Write a post here on Medium. Go to an event and meet people who may want to collaborate with you in the future. Pick up some freelance gigs that will make your resume interesting.
Learn how to code your own website. Learn how to use audio editing software or figure out how to make a simple podcast episode. Use your skills and creativity to get back up after rejection or when you’re feeling discouraged. Make stuff. And then keep making stuff. You’ve got this.
