MAYBE ADULTS SHOULD GO BACK TO BEING KIDS IN THE CLASS ROOM

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to teach kids and adults. I have taught in Secondary Schools and lectured in a Polytechnic, I have also trained kids and adults on Programming Languages in Code Schools. From all these experiences I have come to realize that though it is less stressful to teach adults, kids tend to be more receptive than adults. Adults can be categorized as “Independent Learners” having a mind of their own, they could easily sieve out the details they need from the lecture deciding to settle for “Selective Learning”.

End of Audax Summer Code School 2016, the kids were excited to learn Scratch.

While I was lecturing in the Polytechnic, I had a student that really hated Mathematics. When she was in Secondary School, she struggled to pass the Subject with little interest hoping to escape it in the Higher Institution. Unfortunately for her, she met Business Mathematics. Because she did not have a sound basic knowledge especially in Statistics, she was constantly failing my courses. I had to advise her to go back to her basic Mathematics and Arithmetic. I even took the pains to tutor her personally on some topics to set her off the path and build her self-confidence. I realized that her problem was that she was finding it difficult to relearn.

Kids unlike adults are inquisitive, receptive and adaptive. While most kids would want to know the theory behind everything, adults might not necessarily be interested. Adults have the habit of saving a particular knowledge till it’s useful and deleting it afterwards. Ever wonder why we still remember our Nursery Rhythms, Multiplication Table and most of the things we were thought as kids? It’s probably because at that age we were not Independent Learners and we had not learned the Sieving Approach.

What I admire the most about kids is their open mindedness, willingness to learn, relearn and unlearn. This is one of the toughest learning approach for adults, especially re-learning. Whenever something sticks to the brain, it can hardly be edited only deleted at will. Kids on the other hand are open minded especially when they are being introduced to new topics perhaps because they have not had a prior knowledge, they accept whatever they are told , they trust their Instructors and they are “Flexible Learners” always willing to relearn. If adults can go back to being kids in the Classroom, both learning and teaching will be a lot easier for Students and Teachers respectively.
