Why do you assume the lack of presence implies women in tech are missing technical skills?

Why do you assume the lack of presence implies women in tech are missing technical skills?

This is exactly the negative assumptions we need to stop making. I know many technically strong women in tech.

I also know many who have founded and run their own startup. My boss is one of them.

The issue is that they are not asked to speak at these conferences. Typically the organizers of the conference are men and they naturally reach out to their networks to find speakers. People in our networks tend to be like us. As a result many of their connections are also men. With this in mind organizers of all types need to make an effort to reach out to people outside of their network and mindfully look for diversity in their speakers.

There are fewer women in tech. This is true. You do have to look harder to find them to speak at a conference. Happily, DevelopHer has created a fantastic list.

Your article also shows the importance of getting more women on panels and speaking at conferences. Without them there people jump to conclusions similar to the ones you have jumped to.

If we ever want to see the ratio of women in tech change we need to get more female speakers at conferences. This will help change the perception of people of all genders that women belong there.
