likeagirl.io Writer’s Guide
You need an account to start writing on likeagirl.io. Start by clicking the login button on our Writer’s Page or following the instructions to create an account. Once you’re logged in, you can start a new post in 4 ways:
- On the homepage, click “Submit A Story” in the navigation bar, OR
- On your Dashboard, hover over the “+ New” in the top bar then click “Post”, OR
- On your Dashboard, hover over “Posts” in the sidebar then click “Add New”, OR
- On your Dashboard under the “Quick Draft” section, enter a draft title and content, then click “Save Draft”
The first 3 options will all take you to a new draft. Add a title and start writing! The last option will create a draft post for you, which you can see if you hover over “Posts” and click “All Posts”. This is how you access all of your articles.
When submitting a post, you must include a title, your post content (including any images you want to include), and a featured image. Although not required, you can also select categories and tags to include before you submit. Categories and tags may be changed by the editors.
When you’re finished, click the “Submit for Review” button. Do not submit your article for review until you’re ready for your article to be published. If you want to save changes without submitting your article, click “Save Draft.”
If your article needs any major changes, an editor will contact you through the email associated with your likeagirl.io account. Editors may make minor changes or rearrangements before publishing without notifying the author.
Start by using the standard structure for any post – an introduction, the body content, and a conclusion. Labeling the introduction and conclusion isn’t necessary, but adding descriptive headers to organize your post is always recommended. Break your post up into paragraphs, and use an extra line break instead of indenting new paragraphs.
Images help readers visualize your content and give the eyes a break, so try to include one or a few images to break up your article, and always include a featured image. When including images in the body of your post, add line breaks around them, align them center, and set the size to “Large” by clicking the image, then the pencil icon. Writers can embed images in HTML in the “Text” editor or add them from our Media Library or upload new images. If you don’t include a featured image in your submission, our editors will find and add one before publishing.
It’s not necessary to use videos in any of your posts, but sometimes they’re a part of the discussion, or they help make your point or inform your readers. Do not upload videos to the Media Library. Videos can be embedded in HTML format using the “Text” editor. Like images, add line breaks around them and align them center.
Making your point with a post is much easier if you have other sources to back you up. Include links using hyperlinks that highlight text relevant to your statement.
“We’ve made a lot of progress for gender equality in STEM, but women still only make up 20% of chemical engineers and 18% of software developers overall. This points to…”
Don’t forget to link between your own posts! If you write a series or multiple posts on a similar topic, linking to your own content is a great way to get eyes on more of your content. Use hyperlinks that highlight the title of your post in a sentence introducing it.
